How to Choose the Right Printing Method for Your Product Labels

Understanding Flexographic Label Printing

Flexographic printing utilities uniquely crafted printing plates to roll ink across your labels and packaging. The process is similar to a letterpress, only significantly faster and more advanced. One of the best advantages we find with flexographic printing is the overall versatility when it comes to packaging materials. Because flexographic printing can be done on such a wide range of substrates, it is often our first choice for many large-scale printing jobs. The relatively low cost, fast turnaround, and excellent quality make flexographic printing an easy choice for many industries. For unique printing solutions we are able to utilize flexographic printing alongside other printing methods like lamination, embossing, and even digital printing. How Different Printing Methods Compare

Label Printing: Flexographic Vs. Digital

There are pros and cons to both Flexographic Printing and Digital Printing. Flexo printing is generally used for any product that is high volume. Because flexo printing requires printing plates, often we utilize this printing style for products that have wide distribution. This printing method saves our clients time and money. Once we have approved the printing plate and label we are able to print labels very quickly. However, if frequent design changes are required for the label, creating new printing plates may slow down the process. With flexo printing we are able to print in a wide selection of substrates, which makes the process more flexible for selecting packaging and materials. Digital printing is best for small-scale label printing, or for labels that have frequent design changes. We are able to change the graphic assets faster and cheaper. Both options have benefits, and often the best solution is to utilize both printing methods for our clients.

Label Printing: Flexographic VS. Offset Printing

Both Flexographic and Offset Printing methods have unique advantages. These two methods utilize different styles of printing plates, and many printers prefer flexographic printing. Offset printing is typically done on porous material and flat surfaces, while flexo printing can be done on many different materials including foil, plastic, and many non-absorbent substrates. Flexo printing can also utilize a variety of different inks, including inks that can be quickly UV cured. Offset printing almost exclusively uses oil-based inks. Flexo printing can be utilized for hybrid printing alongside digital printing which makes it a great solution for many printing jobs. Some printing jobs may benefit from the more traditional offset printing process, but flexo printing is largely preferred by printers and clients.

Deciding The Best Printing Method for Your Products

Narrowing down which printing process you will use to label your product can be confusing, so it’s important to understand the unique benefits each has to offer. We typically suggest the flexo printing process with clients who need large scale label printing done for an existing product that is distributed widely.

Our flexo printer can use any Pantone color, and in situations where a client doesn’t have the exact color we can use a sample to color match. Depending on the materials your product is packaged in, flexo printing may be the best option. Its versatility makes it a great option for label printing on non-absorbent substrates.
