You could have the best-tasting beer in the world, but it still has to win your target customer’s attention on a crowded store shelf. That’s why your label is so important. So what makes a great beer label? These are some of the most important aspects of beer label design:
Before you design your beer label, you should be able to articulate what makes your beer unique. What kind of beer is it? An IPA and a porter have extremely different personalities. Who are your customers? The age, gender, and interests of your target customers should also inform your label’s design. How do you want your customers to feel when they’re drinking your beer? Excited? Rugged? Sophisticated? Knowing your craft beer’s identity is the first step in designing its label.
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to label shapes and sizes. We can print labels in a variety of unique shapes to give your beer bottles a one-of-a-kind look. We can also print separate labels for the front and back of your bottle. Keep in mind that there are pros and cons to uniquely shaped labels. Unique shapes will make your beer stand out on the shelf, but they’re more complicated to design. They also leave you less room for your fine print. Standard labels, on the other hand, are simpler to design, but they won’t give you the same visual edge.
Color is one of the best tools you have to grab your customer’s attention. Colors evoke emotions, memories, and mental associations. How do you want your customers to feel when they see your beer? Warm and bright colors like red, orange, and yellow evoke excitement, while cool colors like blue, green, and purple inspire calmness and relaxation. If your beer is seasonal, consider designing your label to reflect the time of year. Fall and winter beers are usually associated with darker, richer colors, while spring and summer beers usually feature brighter colors or pastels.
You can design the coolest label in the world, but it’s useless if it doesn’t communicate what’s inside the bottle. Make sure your beer type is prominently featured on your bottle’s label. It’s also helpful to include a short description of your beer’s flavors, taste, and consistency. If your customers are reading your beer’s label, chances are the bottle is already in their hands. Make sure the words on your label are interesting enough for them to keep it there!
The style and appearance of the words on your label can be just as impactful as the words themselves. Be deliberate about your beer label’s fonts. Serif fonts are seen as more traditional, while sans-serif fonts give the text a more modern appearance. If you’re going for a classy, sophisticated look, a script font might be appropriate. There are also an endless number of abstract fonts out there if you want your text to jump off the label. Other important typography decisions include font size, color, hierarchies, alignment, and contrast.
Craft beer labels are works of art. The art on your label gives your beer its character and helps your customers remember it. Here are some imagery ideas to inspire your next piece of label art:
Your beer label’s material impacts the way it looks and feels. Films are smooth and clear, while papers give labels a textured, handcrafted look. We have a wide variety of label substrates to choose from:
Want to make your beer labels even more intriguing? We can also print labels with unique embellishments. Embellishments are special effects that enhance your labels’ appearance and invite your customers to feel them. Mammoth offers a wide range of embellishments, including:
Your craft beer’s packaging is another important design consideration. Make sure your beer’s packaging is consistent with its label design. If they don’t match, it makes your brand look messy and unprofessional. Our designers can help you design 6-pack containers and other beer packaging solutions.
Make sure your beer label has all the information required of it by law. You don’t want to finish designing your label and then be forced to redesign it when it doesn’t meet the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau’s beer labeling requirements.
